Spotlight - Kayaking the Suwannee

One of our Past Masters, Jeffrey, on his kayak on the Suwannee River

A Great Start

The day started a little chilly and cloudy but the river had a perfect flow for a relaxed pace. The foam you see here is a result of the Big Shoals, Florida’s only class III rapids. We put in just after them at the US-41 Bridge.

Clearing Up

Before long the skies cleared and we were blessed with a warm sun, glassy water, and a very slight breeze.

A Lightning Strike

Nature is Awesome

We stopped for lunch and walked up the bank to explore a little bit. Found ourselves on the Suwannee Trail and discovered this tree. It looked like a lightning strike had caused it to explode. Bits of bark and wood were scattered for about fifteen feet in one direction. The top half of the tree picked up where that left off and fell into the palms. Really quite a stunning sight.

And of course we picked up any trash we saw. It was a good day and there was very little. We’re lucky to have such a beautiful natural resource in our back yard. I recommend everyone to make a day out on the water or the trails. Florida has so much to offer and we are blessed to be here.
