<image:title>News - Spotlight - Kayaking the Suwannee - Nature is Awesome</image:title>
<image:caption>We stopped for lunch and walked up the bank to explore a little bit. Found ourselves on the Suwannee Trail and discovered this tree. It looked like a lightning strike had caused it to explode. Bits of bark and wood were scattered for about fifteen feet in one direction. The top half of the tree picked up where that left off and fell into the palms. Really quite a stunning sight.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Freemasonry - The Best You Can Be</image:title>
<image:caption>The ceremonies… We have a system of allegories based on the principles the original masons used to construct elaborate stone buildings. We use those principles to conduct ourselves in a way that best helps our community, makes the most of our potential, and lets us be a part of something bigger than ourselves. The secrets… Much like other tradesmen of the time, the original masons kept their tradecraft skills to themselves. For example, the best baker in town didn’t want his recipes to get out. The secrecy in Masonry comes from that concept. If you want to learn more about and unlock those secrets get in touch with us.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Freemasonry - Giving to Charity</image:title>
<image:caption>We deeply believe in helping others. There are many Masonic organizations devoted to charity. Ever hear of the Shriners and their free hospitals for children? In order to join the Shriners you first have to become a Mason. On a more local level, we here at Ionic No. 101 choose a different 501(c)(3) charitable organization that’s dear to our hearts on an annual basis, and raise money for a donation. Pictured here is the charity box we have in our lodge room, shaped like a trowel. Why a trowel? To spread relief across to those in need.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Freemasonry - What if I’m Not a Man?</image:title>
<image:caption>We have good news! There are Masonic bodies for just about anyone. The Order of the Eastern Star is a way for women to benefit from the same principles a man would from becoming a Master Mason. Is that a pentagram? Yes, technically speaking, it’s a five pointed star. And yes, it’s orientation is upside-down from a traditional star. So what does that mean? Nothing. It’s a common symbol used in many applications, including the Congressional Medal of Honor. Which is given to members of the US Armed Forces for personal acts of bravery and self-sacrifice. And we think that’s pretty cool.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Freemasonry - What if I’m Not 18?</image:title>
<image:caption>We have more good news! The DeMoley and the Rainbow Girls are a great way to introduce children and teenagers to self improvement. These are Masonic bodies for boys (DeMolay) and girls (Rainbow Girls) to get a head start on life and learn about character, morals, and charity.</image:caption>

<image:title>History of Masonry - The Builders</image:title>
<image:caption>This is Canterbury Cathedral, built by the original masons in the year 1070. The first masons were tradesmen we refer to as operative masons. Because weapons weren’t allowed in the church, and the tools to cut stone could be considered weapons, the masons devised a way to cut every single stone to shape, offsite. The stones were then brought on site and assembled according to the master mason’s plan. Imagine the skill and knowledge that took!</image:caption>

<image:title>History of Masonry - The Lodges</image:title>
<image:caption>Operative masons formed guilds and lived in lodges. There, a young man of good character, who otherwise might not have an opportunity for education, would be taught the skills and knowledge needed to become a master mason: designer, builder, and architect. Masonry has always been about growth and improvement. Why did he have to be of good character? Because the lessons he learned were trade secrets, and masons were a business protecting their interests. Secrecy is maintained today for the sake of tradition.</image:caption>

<image:title>History of Masonry - The Transition</image:title>
<image:caption>Nobody knows exactly when operative masons started the transition into Speculative Masonry (non-working masons using the philosophy of masonry to build a better version of themselves). There are records that date back to the 1500s but it could be older than that. Over time, the lodges became social clubs, and the principles of building an impressive structure became a roadmap for how to become a better person. Those Masons that weren’t builders were called “Accepted” Masons. And to make things more official, the Grand Lodge of England was formed in 1717. Hence, modern Masons are referred to as Free and Accepted Masons or F.&A.M.</image:caption>

<image:title>Misconceptions - Presidents</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s true that many prominent men in business and politics were/are Freemasons. Including George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt (pictured here on Mt. Rushmore). But being a Mason is not what got them there. We don’t make men successful. The type of man that makes himself successful is also likely to be interested in Masonry. And as a Freemason, the sky is the limit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Misconceptions - Political Alignment</image:title>
<image:caption>As an organization we don’t get involved in politics. Masons as individuals can have any personal political beliefs they choose. As long as you love your country we don’t care who you vote for. In fact, we don’t want to know. Talking about politics is strictly forbidden here at Ionic No. 101. We prefer harmony over political debate.</image:caption>

<image:title>Misconceptions - The Eye</image:title>
<image:caption>The “all seeing eye” is actually the Eye of Providence. It is one of our symbols but it’s also used by others, including Christian art going back to the 1500’s. In the case of the dollar bill it’s meant to be the eye of God watching over America. The roman numerals and the Latin text are 1776, “He (God) has approved our undertakings,” and “A new order of the ages.” The pyramid is a symbol of strength, it’s 13 layers represent the 13 colonies. This is all about America, not the Freemasons.</image:caption>

<image:title>Misconceptions - The Square and Compasses</image:title>
<image:caption>This is our main symbol. It may appear in a number of variations but they all mean the same thing. They represent the tools the original masons would use to design buildings and we use their meaning to design ourselves as better men. If it were associated with some kind of conspiracy, why would we advertise it? That just wouldn’t make sense.</image:caption>
